Whakapapa Village

This small village is located on the north/west side of Mount Ruapehu (one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes) and is 6 km from the Whakapapa ski area, New Zealand’s largest ski field.

The village has DOC Visitor Centre with exhibits, a store, and helpful staff to give good information about the area, weather conditions, etc.

They can be contacted by:

Email: tongarirovc@doc.govt.nz

Telephone: +64 7 892 3729

Eating establishments include Ma & Mels food cart located outside the Tussock Tavern car park.

Come along and enjoy a cup of coffee, masala chai tea or hot chocolate. They also serve a range of cold drinks, cakes, slices, pies & toasted sandwiches.

Whakapapa Village is the perfect place to stay in both summer or winter: In summer, when hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (New Zealand’s best one day hike), the Tongariro Northern Circuit (one of the DoC ‘Great Walks’) or the more remote ‘Around the Mountain (Mt Ruapehu)’ track. In winter, when skiing the Whakapapa Ski Field.
