CARING FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT
New Zealand’s National Parks represent a glimpse of our environment as it once was, and are cultural icons connecting people to the land.
Tongariro National Park was established in 1887. It was the first national park in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. The area is beautifully stark and rugged with its dramatic, volcanic-formed landscape incorporating mountain peaks, alpine herb fields, native trees, lakes, streams and desert-like land.
Its Dual World Heritage status was inscribed on the World Heritage List which recognises the spectacular physical landscape and ecosystems and its cultural and spiritual significance to Ngāti Tūwharetoa (the local Māori tribe) and symbolises the spiritual links between this community and their environment.

We respectfully request that all visitors adhere to the following Environmental Care Code to ensure every user can enjoy the area for generations to come:
