There are many great short walks in and around Whakapapa Village that are accessible for nearly everyone. The majority of shorter walks are on well-surfaced tracks with longer walks following polled routes. Below is a brief description of the walks that can be found close by. A more detailed guide with maps is available from the Holiday Park Shop or Department of Conservation Visitor Centre.
Whakapapa Nature Walk 15 min loop track. Begins in Whakapapa Village. Great for the kids, wind your way through naïve bush and learn about unique flora and fauna.
Ridge Walking Track 30-40 minutes, 1.2km return via same track. Begins in Whakapapa Village. Soak in panoramic views of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and the surrounding landscape. A great place to experience our mind blowing sunrises and sunsets.
Taranaki Falls Walking Track 2 hours, 6km loop track. Begins in Whakapapa Village. Excellent views of the surrounding landscape, make your way to see Taranaki Falls plunge over the edge of a large lava flow, which erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago.
Whakapapanui Walking Track 2 hours, 6km return via same track or Bruce Road. Begins just beyond the Holiday Park. Follow the Whakapapanui Stream and enjoy walking though the regenerating beech forest. A great option for a rainy day.
Silica Rapids Walking Track 2 ½ hours, 7km return via Bruce Road. Begins just beyond the Holiday Park. This track takes in a range of vegetation types as well as the creamy-white terraces of Silica Rapids. On a fine day it also offers spectacular views of the mountains.
Tama Lakes Tramping Track 5-6 hours, 17km return via same track. Begins in Whakapapa Village. Climb to view the Tama Lakes which occupy several old explosion craters on the Tama Sadle between Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. A great option when the weather is not the best for the Tongariro Crossing.
