From the grandeur of ancient forests to alpine herb fields and volcanic landscapes, Tongariro National Park boasts a number of excellent walking and climbing experiences. The exciting volcanic nature of this area has always been the key visitor attraction, and of course the snow on the mountains in the winter.
Established in 1887, Tongariro was the first national park in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. It is also a dual World Heritage. This means that the park is regarded as world class in terms of scenery and unique natural features, but the region also has great spiritual importance to the Tangata Whenua (or People of the Land), the local Maori people.
The Tongaririo National Park is an area of extremes. It’s a place of tranquillity as well as action activities, a destination to discover, explore and treasure. From colourful herb fields to lush forests, from clear blue crater lakes to desert-like surroundings and active volcanoes. Whakapapa (pronounced as ‘fa ka pa pa’) literally means, ancestry, genealogy or connection to the land.
