For the more experienced hikers, there are several combinations of multi-day walks available in the National Park. The main combinations are known as the 'Tongariro Northern Circuit' and 'Round Ruapehu'.
Both are very challenging trips and should not be undertaken unless you are fit and experienced, and come well prepared. We can provide you with more detailed information and the DoC Visitor Center in the Village can also help. Below is just a taste of what is on offer.
Round the Mountain Track
4-6 Day Track around Mt Ruapehu. Safest time to walk from December to March. Starts just beyond the Holiday Park. An ideal tramp for those seeking solitude, magnificent mountain views and a backcountry experience. The tramp is more remote than the popular Tongariro Northern Circuit. Sections of the track can be walked in 1-2 days.
The Tongariro Northern Circuit
1-4 Day Track over Mt Tongariro and around Mt Ngauruhoe. Safest time to walk from December – March. Starts from Whakapapa Village. Encompassing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing the Northern Circuit is one of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’. Experiencing the unique volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park you will see pristine mineral filled lakes; jagged lava flows and enjoy the shade of beautiful Beech forest.
One day, overnight and multi day tramps can be undertaken on the Northern Circuit. Hut & Camping passes are available to buy at the Holiday Park Office.
